The three children – Ifeoma, 9, Emeka, 7, and Ugoma, 3 – had played cheerfully with their peers during the day, and perhaps bid their parents goodnight before they went to bed. No one could have imagined that the kids would not live beyond that night.
A candle flame, as gathered, caused their painful death while the three kids were sleeping. Their father, who left to visit their mother who had just given birth at a hospital, allegedly lighted the candle.
The candle, according to unconfirmed sources, fell and started burning the furniture. There was no rescue for the innocent kids. By the time their father returned to the apartment, the worst had happened. His children were already burnt beyond recognition.
An eyewitness told Expdonaloaded blog that the eldest of the kids cuddled his younger ones while they died in excruciating pain.
As if the family’s woes were not enough, their newborn baby, Expdonaloaded blog was told, also died at the hospital. With the demise of the baby, the bereaved family has become childless.
When Expdonaloaded blog visited the scene of the tragic incident yesterday, all the occupants of the house had deserted the place. Expdonaloaded blog gathered that the police had earlier evacuated the charred remains of the kids.
The landlord of the building, whose apartment was not affected by the fire, was not around when our correspondents visited. He was simply identified as Mr. Oyekola.
According to some sympathetic neighbours, no one knew the whereabouts of the parents. Some alleged that they ran away for fear of possible arrest by the police, while others in the area said the police was already questioning the couple.
Co-tenants did not immediately notice the fire, which started around 10pm, until smoke started billowing from the ceiling at the victims’ residence. Some residents were said to have battled to put out the fire, without knowing that the kids were trapped inside the apartment.
By the time residents resolved to call the fire service men, a lot of damages had been done, especially as their father had locked them inside while going out.
A neighbour who refused to be mentioned in print, said the children’s father went to buy some drinks in the next street, insisting that the father did not go to the hospital as he claimed.
“We saw the fire around 10pm after their father had gone out to buy some drinks. Before he left the house, he lighted a candle and padlocked the door, while his children – two boys and a girl – were asleep,” a neighbour said.
Our correspondents further learnt that the affected family had been given a quit notice. The residence where the incident occurred was more of a slum. The shanty rooms in the boys’ quarters where the bereaved family lived were sandwiched between the landlord’s apartment and a fence belonging to the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC). A narrow pathway served as an access to the ill-fated apartment. The boys’ quarters comprised two blocks of seven rooms, closely built beside each other.post by Expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
The victims lived in one of the rooms in the boys’ quarters. Other rooms in the house were under lock and key. Expdonaloaded blog gathered that the residents had fled for fear of possible arrest by the police. Many of the sympathisers, who said they suspected foul play, wondered how none of the neighbours heard the agonising screams of the children as fire razed the apartment.
A neighbour, who would not give his name, said the only lady in the house during the incident had a hearing challenge and might not have heard the children screaming.
The neighbour told the reporters: “The landlord is a very strict person. He doesn’t care about his tenants any longer. In fact, he has given them a quit notice for some time now, and the tenants have refused to move out. I know there was no unity among the residents and between the residents and the landlord.
“All that the kids required was an external force to help pull down the locked door, as they would have obviously been shouting for help. I am sure their screams were ignored.”
Another neighbour faulted what he called the arbitrary wiring in the house.
The man said: “This house is not even of a kitchen standard, let alone a house. Can you take a look at this water tank mounted up? You can see that it can collapse anytime to injure or kill small kids. Even look at the naked wire all around the house. As you can see, this wire just got burnt yesterday, even after the incident. It took the efforts of some boys around to put out the fire too.
“Investigation must be launched against this disaster. We need to know whether there was indeed no one in the house as the kids groaned to death. We challenge the government of Akinwunmi Ambode to ensure that justice is done.”
