The pirates were said to have killed two persons on the spot and injured about seven in an attempt to gain entry into the base.
These pirates, checks by Expdonaloaded blog revealed, were mostly former militants between the ages of 20 and 30, who were said to be operating from a creek around Akpabuyo axis for quite some time now.
Sources close to security operatives informed Expdonaloaded blog that the sea robbers had been blocking old Bakassi waterways and robbing hundreds of passengers, including students travelling to Cameroun, tourists and traders of their money and valuable items ranging from handsets, jewelry to handbags.
An eyewitness told Expdonaloaded blog that the pirates numbering about 35 invaded the Marine Police base at about 1am yesterday in three speed boats and four jeeps, engaged the security operatives in a gun duel for about three hours and subsequently over-powered the police officers on duty.
The account claimed that while about 16 of the pirates arrived in a convoy of four jeeps on land, others were conveyed in three speedboats. On arriving, they opened fire on the base killing two persons on the spot and injuring about seven.
“Immediately, the Marine policemen responded and engaged them in long gun battle, trying to repel them, but were over-powered by the militants, who were more armed with sophisticated weapons and were combat-ready.”The eyewitness said the pirates finally gained entry into the armoury and carted away cache of arms and ammunition and later took away two gunboats belonging to the Marine Police.
It was learnt that one of the two persons reportedly killed was a police officer on duty while the other victim was a gateman at the Prayer City Church situated very close to the Marine Base.
Those injured, sources close to the base, said were receiving treatment at some private clinics. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Hogan Bassey, could not be reached for his comments, but some officers at the command said the police were gathering intelligence on the incident and would soon make their findings public.
