Expdonaloaded News; NASS crisis: ‘APC’ll come out stronger’

Eze
Uchechukwu Nwachukwu is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State. In a recent interview with Daily Sun on developments in the National Assembly, he said the lawmakers would soon settle down to the task of helping President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver good governance to Nigerians. Nwachukwu who is also a prominent Igbo leader expressed optimism that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would come out of its present crisis stronger. He speaks further on other national issues.
Excerpts: What is your take on recent clash among lawmakers over the leadership of the National Assembly? It is a spill over of the clash of interests among the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC). I am happy that the APC governors and President Buhari are already seeking a way out of the impasse. The party hierarchy should immediately get to work and nip the crisis in the bud before it escalates. What harm could result from prolonged crisis in the party? It can cause serious damage and stir disaffection, bad blood, and rancour among party faithful, thereby robbing Nigerians of the precious change that they voted for. This is because peace is the solid foundation that other brilliant policies would be actualized. Without peace, there would be no economic recovery, industrialization and construction of good roads. In short this administration cannot achieve anything without peace. So, it is important for APC leaders to yield to dialogue in other to solve the problems. How can Nigeria attain industrialisation? Industrialisation comes with robust planning. For Nigeria to join the rank of developed nations, she needs to evolve development plans that are based on local content. If properly executed, it would become solution to problem of unemployment in the country. So, Nigerians should embrace peace so as to allow President Muhammadu Buhari deliver good governance to Nigerians. As a manufacturer for instance, I need steady electricity to operate. Energy is key to industrialisation. So we hope to see the APC government give Nigerians steady power supply, adequate security and stimulate the economy. Those are short and long term goals that will reposition Nigeria for greatness. President Buhari has all the experience to make Nigeria great. He has done this before when he was governor of the North East region, which covers 6 states today. He has also served as oil minister where under his watch, three refineries were built. If the energy crisis is solved, our industries will roar back to life. If the economy improves nationwide, the migration to urban areas will stop and the center would be less attractive to people searching for jobs as they can now stay in their villages, local governments and states to eke out living. Before the election, you played a vital role in ensuring peace and orderliness among Ndigbo in Lagos and their host communities, how do you intend to continue to promote peace in the state? We do not have problem in Lagos APC. What we are clamouring for today is for peace to reign in the party at the national level. I am appealing that the party hierarchy do the needful by bringing all the contenders into one fold and yielding to meaningful dialogue. It is embarrassing when honourable members throw punches on the floor of the hallowed chambers. Now the national body of the party must move to secure the party from disintegrating. I commend President Buhari’s initiatives at bringing all the warring party to a roundtable. It shows that he is a peace loving man who would do every thing possible to secure the unity of the party. It is a good omen and I urge him to continue until peace return to the party. What we want is change to transform Nigeria for good. Would you say the Buhari’s approach to fighting Boko Haram would succeed? Oh yes. He has proverbially hit the ground running in this regard. Remember that immediately after he was inaugurated, he immediately travelled to the neighbouring African countries where he rallied them into forming strategic alliance and setting up Multinational Joint task Force (MJTF) to combat insurgents. The move has also yielded support from the international community as the United States has promised financial assistance to help fight the scourge. Nigeria has sense of purpose with the assurance that soon, normalcy would return to the North East. What is your agenda for Governor Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State? Let me start first by congratulating Gov Ambode over his victory and successful inauguration as governor. Well, the party manifesto is already there. All the governor should do is to follow this manifesto and deliver the much expected change to Lagosians. For instance the governor can embark on operation fill 100 potholes to alleviate the sufferings of motorist on roads that are riddled with potholes. The governor should appoint men of integrity into his cabinet and also remember to sustain the cooperation between Ndigbo and the state by giving them more slots in his cabinet.
