A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State
capital, yesterday remanded a 20-year-old man, Michael Bassey in prison
custody for allegedly raping and deflowering a 19-year-old secondary
school girl (names withheld).The accused person, who appeared before Magistrate Abiola
Onifade, was alleged to have committed the offence on June 10 at the
premises of the Command Day Secondary, Lafenwa in Abeokuta.Police prosecutor, Inspector Idowu Ogunleye, said the accused person
who was of no fixed address and occupation, had unlawful carnal
knowledge of the student.
Ogunleye told the court that soldiers, who went in search of him after he had allegedly committed the offence, arrested the accused person.
“The 19-year-old girl, who attends Premier Secondary School was sent on an errand to Command Day Secondary School. Half way into the school, the accused, who appeared suddenly, dragged her into the bush, filled her mouth with sand and raped her mercilessly, forcibly taking the innocent girl’s virginity.
“She managed to crawl to one of the army checkpoints and the soldiers at the checkpoints went in search of the accused person and subsequently arrested him,” he said.
Bassey, whose plea was not taken by the court was represented by Adebayo Ogundeyi.
The prosecutor told the court that Bassey committed the offence, which contravened Sections 357 and 358 of the Criminal Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The magistrate later ordered the accused to be remanded in Oba Prison pending the advice from the Director of Public Prosecution.
She thereafter adjourned the matter to August 21 for further hearing.

three men, including Isaac Uche (49), Sunday Aneato (26), and Opeyemi
Sodeinde (18) in prison custody for allegedly kidnapping one Olalekan
Olajide.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Abimbola, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison custody pending the receipt of legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).
The accused persons, whose addresses were not disclosed in the court, were facing a three-count charge bordering on kidnapping, murder and conspiracy.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused persons and others still at large, committed the offences on June 11 at about 7.30 a.m., at No.10, Basiriju St., Babio Bus-Stop in Ota.
Mustapha said the accused persons and their accomplices conspired among themselves to kidnap an eight-year-old Olalekan Olajide, and in the process, killed him.
Abimbola, however, adjourned the case till September 4 for mention.

Police arrest 2 over murder of APC chieftain in FESTAC
Homicide section of the Lagos State Police Command has
arrested two suspects as it commenced investigation into the killing of
an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Salawe Daramola.
The command’s spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), confirmed the arrest in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.
Nwosu, who did not mention if the two suspects were politicians, however, said they were arrested during the Sallah celebration in different parts of the state.
He disclosed that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.
It was gathered that the two gunmen who came on a motorcycle last Thursday evening shot dead Daramola, a chieftain of APC in Ward B in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the assailants stormed the deceased’s residence at K Close, 3rd Avenue, FESTAC Town and shot him at close range three times.
The suspects allegedly arrived the place at about 5.30 p.m. to perpetrate the dastardly act.
Nwosu said the suspects were first interrogated by the Area E Commander, ACP Frank Mba to ascertain their level of involvement, and from there they were allegedly indicted before being taken to SCID.
