The Governor-Elect of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Umahi, has described
the death of Senator Uche Chukwumerije as a big blow to the Ndigbo,
Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
Umahi said Chukwumerije’s patriotic and nationalist bent came to
the fore in the Second Republic when he joined the late Malam Aminu
Kano, S. G. Ikoku, Balarabe Musa and Chinua Achebe to form the Peoples
Redemption Party (PRP) where he became the national publicity secretary
of the party.
He stated that Chukwumerije was an intellectual giant, an enigma
with a fecund mind, an accomplished orator, political strategist,
renowned Pan-Africanist, media mogul, politician and freedom fighter,
who was associated with several progressive movements ranging from his
formation of the Socialist Workers and Farmers Party with late Dr.
Tunji Otegbeye in the early 60s...post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
“He was a moving encyclopedia of Nigerian politics. He fought many
battles for the labour movement and the working class in Nigeria.
“An incisive debater, committed Pan-Nigerian politician and seasoned
tactician, Chukwumerije’s tenure as minister of information under the
regime of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida proved a melting point in his vibrant
career.”
