The son of a school teacher has been arrested for allegedly leading an armed robbery gang that specialized in car snatching.
Amuche Chukwuemeka and two others laid ambush at hotels in Festac
Lagos, for people who drive expensive cars and the moment any of the
victims attempted to leave the premises, the gang would steal such cars
at gun point.
They are being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of Lagos State Police Command.
Chukwuemeka said: “I am from Umuguma in Owerri West Local Government
Area of Imo State. I am a student of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede,
Owerri, Imo State studying Electrical/Electronics Engineering. My mother
is in Lagos while my father was in Abuja. It is over 15 years now that
my parents divorced. Since my mother has no support from my father, we
started suffering and we are two boys and one girl.
“ I live in Festac with my mother at 1st Avenue H Close. She is a
teacher and that is why I am worried that a teacher’s son is a member of
an armed robbery gang. I am the gang leader. In fact, I fainted when
the police brought me from Ogun State Police Command to Lagos State. How
will my mother receive the news? It is really a shameful scenario.
“We are a three-man gang. Three of us sat down at an hotel in Maza
Maza, Lagos and decided to snatch a car. I provided the gun. I bought it
from a cultist, Cigairo. I told him that I would join his group if he
would give me the gun. He demanded N15,000 which I paid.
“We now went to a club at 1st Avenue and sat down opposite the hotel
while we were observing a man who drove in a Sports Utility Vehicle
(SUV) We did not know the man. He parked and went to urinate. When we
had the opportunity to strike, I pointed a gun at him. My friend,
Santos, pushed him inside the car. It was around 9.26pm. We collected
N5,000, two ATM cards and phones. We later gave the man N1,000 to find
his way while we proceeded to the East with the SUV.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
“My brother, luck did not smile on us as we were arrested by some
soldiers when our vehicle developed a fault along Ijebu-Ode Road. We
were transferred to Ijebu Ode from there to Eleweran, Abeokuta and later
to Festac division, Lagos.
“I swear, it was the quest for education that made me to become a
robber. It was as a result of efforts to get money and continue my
education as my father abandoned us,” he said.
The second suspect, Blessing Idotie, said: “It was Chukwuemeka who
handed his gun to me when he took over the steering. I knew Santos as a
footballer. I put the victim between myself and Santos.
The third suspect Enwelikwu Santos said, “I am from Kwale, Ndokwa
South, Ogume village, Delta State. I am a footballer. We are grassroots
team. My mother left the house for me early this year and relocated to
Abuja.
My father is late and we are four girls and a boy. I am the only son.
We live in a one room apartment and flood used to disturb us and we
could not look for another room because we had no money. My role is to
search thevictim”
Confirming the arrest, the command’s spokesman, Mr Ken Nwosu, said
the police have stepped up manhunt for other members of the gang.
