With barely a month to the commencement of the 2017 Africa Cup of
Nations qualifying series, Super Eagles’ reject, Obafemi Martins, on
Sunday, sent fresh signal to Coach Stephen Keshi with a brace in Seattle
Sounders’ 3-1 defeat to New York City FC at the Bronx, as he continued
his fine-form in the current United Sates’ Major League Soccer season.
The former Inter Milan of Italy’s ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’ currently tops the MLS scorers’ chart with six goals.
Martins was left out of the Super Eagles’ squad that won the Africa
Cup of Nations in South Africa in 2013 but was recalled weeks after the
tournament for a 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Kenya. But
after two unimpressive outings on the road to Brazil 2014, Keshi shut
him out of the national team, the high-point being his exclusion from
Nigeria’s squad to the last World Cup.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
Although he was forced to announce his retirement from international
football over what he described as frustration by Keshi, the former
Newcastle United of England forward recently hinted that he could return
to the Super Eagles if a new manager offers him a fresh chance.
Martins scored in the 23rd minute in Monday’s game after he raced
through on goal before slotting calmly beyond the New York goalkeeper to
give Sounders the lead. He completed his brace in the 67th minute for
his team’s third goal after Clint Dempsey had scored the second.
Martins had scored 18 goals on 38 caps in a somewhat rocky relationship with Nigeria.
