Any doubt that the infamous Sambisa is a thriving city has been fully
dispelled since the Nigeian army, backed by the international forces
eventually summoned courage to venture into the evil forest. Since the
invasion, the revelation coming out, in terms of victims that have been
rescued has revealed that the insurgents had a thriving city inside the
forest.
From discoveries so far, the forest is even bigger, in terms of
the number of inhabitants, than some communities in Nigeria. Any wonder
why the Nigerian army had been so reluctant in venturing into the
forest.
From information so far, the army had rescued about 800 women and
children from Sambisa. Giving a breakdown, the army said 293 captives
were rescued from the sect on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 and another 160
were freed on Wednesday, 29.
While an additional 234 women and children were rescued from the
forest on Friday, May 1. Coupled with the insurgents, this is definitely
a small town in the forest..post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com.. I am sure further revelations would reveal
all those amenities associated with towns like that, such as markets,
village square and the likes.
Giving a specific breakdown, the army said among the rescued are male
children between ages six to 12, another set of children who are five
years old, female children between ages six to 12 years old. One now
starts wondering, have all these people been living inside Sambisa
‘town’ all these while. How come nobody has raised any issue concerning
these people or are all of them wives and children of the insurgents? Of
course that’s far from the truth, they are people that have been
allegedly enslaved by Boko Haram. This is further evidenced in the tales
by these women who said some of them refused to escape with the
insurgents while some were killed or stoned by escaping insurgents in
the forest. Curiously, in all these, none of the rescued people is among
the over 200 Chibok girls that were taken away in their school more
than a year ago. Indeed, one keeps wondering why this is so and further
calls to question the story of the Chibok girls abduction.
How come nobody has seen a sign of any of the girls from Chibok
school since the rescue started? Not just one. Some people have said the
Chibok abduction is just one of the conspiracies to bring down the
Jonathan administration and that the entire story is a fabrication. I ,
of course, didn’t believe the story. Many reasons are responsible for my
disbelief..post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com.. The first being the calibre of people who took it upon
themselves to pressure the government to act on the matter which
eventually made the issue a campaign slogan of the opposition party.
People who had taken the campaign all over the world and had got the
buy-in of the United Nations, the United States of America, Britain,
France, Germany and major countries around the world and have aroused
the ire of these nations against the government of President Goodluck
Jonathan. I cannot believe that someone like Oby Ezekwesili would lend
her name to such odious conspiracy. So I believe the Chibok story.
But now, there are doubts in my mind. The doubts came because of
what’s happening now. How come we have so many captives in that forest,
nearly 1000 women, children and no alarm was raised that this large
number had gone missing in the communities affected. Then why did the
Chibok girls’ abduction become an issue if Boko Haram had always made
forays into these communities to cart away these girls and women before
the Chibok abduction? I am really baffled and I think it is important
that we have some answers. The answer should also take into
consideration who these people that have been freed really are. Are they
Boko Haram captives or wives who had gone to join their husband in the
forest? If they are captives, how were they kept that several of them
could not escape from captivity? I do not know the capacity of the sect
to monitor their prisoners, but how many insurgents would be needed to
cow these large number into submissiveness and not want to escape? What
about the children? Some are between the ages of six to 12 years old,
some are about five years old. Where did these children sprout from?
Were they also captured with their mother and herded into the forest?
For the five-year old and below, one can say these were born in the
forest, but the ones that are in the age brackets of seven to 12 years
could not have been born in that forest, so they must have gone into
that forest with or to their ‘parents’. It is quite simple, Boko Haram
is less than seven years and from the information available, the forest
itself could not have been that long established by the sect.
Well, let us leave that and go into another area of concern. From
available information, about 214 of the rescued girls are pregnant. So
what’s going to happen to the pregnancy? Are these girls going to carry
the pregnancy to term, that is, give birth to the children whose father
no one could identify? In fact, knowing the father is the least of the
problem..post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com.. The major problem is the trauma of allowing these children to
be born knowing fully well that they were fathered by insurgents. Did
these young pregnant women willingly allow themselves to be impregnated?
I doubt. So must they be allowed to give birth to these children? I
know we do not have a law that has legalized abortion, but this is a
matter of saving the lives of these young mothers. Saving in the sense
that allowing them to give birth to these children is to consign them to
a lifetime of regret, and constant agony as the children would be a
constant reminder of the trauma they went through.
The words of Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima are quite
striking. He said the sect members deliberately rape the girls with the
intention of getting them pregnant so that they would give birth to
future insurgents ( though this is debatable when you consider the
argument of nature over nurture). Because the sect members belief that
any child fathered by them would share their ideology. He said there
should be a deliberate plan to break the chain anticipated by the
insurgents to increase the population of Boko Haram. “ From my studies
of practice associated with the insurgents, there is a general belief
among them that whoever doesn’t share their ideology is an infidel and
as such, his wife and property could be freely acquired by the sect
members, with wives serving as slaves that should satisfy the sexual
urge of their masters”.
So what is the governor advocating with the above when he said there
should be a deliberate programme to thwart the insurgent from
replicating themselves ? Of course, we all know. Even if he is not
saying it in so many words. We know politicians are master of
obfuscation.
Let each of us ask ourselves, assuming we have young girls abducted
by kidnappers or got raped by armed robber. What would we do? Of course,
we go straight to the hospital for thorough screening and treatment to
prevent any untoward thing. Nobody would allow his or her child to give
birth to the seed of an armed robber or kidnapper. So why should we not
give this attention to the rescued victims. Should they be allowed to
carry the shame of their experience forever. Even my catholic brethren
whose doctrine is against abortion would consider this extenuating
circumstance.
