A Police officer and two suspected militants have died during a gun
duel between the Bayelsa State Police Command security outfit, Operation
Doo Akpo and suspected militants.
Findings indicated that the suspected militants attacked the
Operation Doo Akpo team at Opiama in Nembe Local Government Area of the
state.
According to reports, the police team was drafted to the area to protect construction workers working on the Ogbia- Nembe road.
The suspected militants were said to have stormed the construction
site to abduct some workers when the Police resisted the attack and in
the shoot-out that ensued, two of the militants were killed while a
Police Sergeant identified as Matthew Simon was hit by bullets and he
died.
A security source said militants had stormed the site in 2014 to
kidnap some expatriates working on the road, but they were not lucky this
time as the police team was well equipped to fight them.
“This time around, they were not successful as the policemen engaged
them in a gun duel. One of the policemen died while the police said they
killed two of the militants. The militants left with the dead bodies of
their colleagues.”
Meanwhile, four workers of Nigerian Agip Oil Company ( NAOC) have
been kidnapped by gunmen operating along the Southern Ijaw Local
Government waterways.
The workers were said to be traveling on a speedboat from Amassoma to Ogoinbiri when their boat was attacked by the gunmen.
