“Before now, we dominated in Africa and our big worry was that we should look beyond Africa to challenge world super powers like Germany, Sweden and Brazil. But rather than make progress at the world stage, African countries have stopped our dominance and are now beginning to beat us with ease. This is worrisome, we need to do something about our women football,” Bassey said.
The veteran journalist who is a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee said it was embarrassing to see Falcons being beaten in two consecutive games by Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon.
The Falcons on Tuesday lost 1-2 to Cameroon in the African Games semi final tie. The Chris Danjuma tutored side had before then lost by the same margin to Cote D’Ivoire in their last group game.
The NFF had at its Port Harcourt board meeting last week said it would name a new coach for the team in another two weeks. Danjuma who is in charge in interim capacity had clearly shown that he cant take the team to the next level. The Nasarawa born tactician was the assistant coach to sacked head coach Edwin Okon. Okon was fired after the Canada 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup where the Falcons failed to go beyond the group stage.
