He says: “I do not see Nigerian musicians as competing with me. Lucky 3ple Star rides o the commercial tricycle, also called Keke-Napep. In an interview with Abuja Metro, he said that but for lack of finance, he should be a force to reckon with: “I am aiming to break records of the likes of R. Kelly, 2Pac and the rest of them.”
My style
I do all types of music, from RnB to Rap to dance hall music. I do gyration music also, depending on the inspiration I get. I have been doing music since I was born but I started recording in 2011. I waited so long to start recording because I did not have enough money to promote my music. To do music, you need more than just talent. You need a lot of money. I went to Lagos and met Nedu Music Entertainment to help me put my music on tape. But the problem there is that people in Lagos that are into music are too many. You would have to pay a lot of money; unless you meet a good person who would help you promote it, if not the rest would take the profit from you. Many producers in Nigeria are just out for the money and they are not concerned about what you bring to the table.
Growing Up
I lost my father early in life, and my mother got married to another man and gave birth to six children for the other man. So in all, we are nine children.
Back in secondary school I had a friend and we were in a group popularly known as J-Square. We wanted to be like P-Square although my friend wasn’t as talented as I was. I had to leave the group later. I have always believed that one day, I will make it and become a super star. Back then in school, when I sing, people would think I wasn’t the one that wrote the song because of how good it was. So then I knew I was gifted.
I am blessed. A lot of people know me in Abuja here as a keke rider and I own my own Keke Napep. I do order businesses like supply pure water and iced water. And am making little money basically to pursue my music career
Livelihood
I have been riding this Keke Napep since 2009. My talent is what basically pushed me into doing this business so that I could get money to promote my business. In this my business, I have invested not less than N500,000 but it has been like I have been working for other people. In fact I had to give that business a break. Now I am working to get more money and push my music.
Set backs
I went to school but stopped at SS2, because of lack of money. I came to Abuja in the year 2008. I got to notice that the biggest problem facing the Nigerian music industry is that too many people have used it as an alternative. Everybody wants to do music now, whether it is their talent or not. Everybody wants to sing. So marketers do not want to listen to your music again, all they want to know is if you have money for them. If you do not have the money, they’ll treat you like a fly.
Journey from Lagos
I was at Lagos initially but I realised that music is a talent and you can make it anywhere. Music is spiritual. Everyone is running to Lagos but music is a thing of talent. Anywhere you are you will still make it. Take for instance ‘Flavour’. He started in Enugu.
Role models
When I started, I wanted to be like R Kelly and Akon but I realised that they are different from us and the difference is that in our own country, we appreciate dance hall music. In Nigeria here, I started to imitate Flavour but later I discovered my own style and I know I am the best. I am better than Flavour but I don’t have money that is my problem.
Even N1m is enough for me to start. I have a video already; I have recorded my songs, so all I need now is money to promote my music. People have been saying you can only make it in the industry these days if you are fine. Music is not about beauty and being handsome. To me music is a gift, if it comes upon you and you make it, people would see otherwise even if you are ugly.
My dream
I dream to work with Don Jazzy someday. He is the best producer is Nigeria. But my producer Mickez is a very good producer also. If you listen to the songs he has produced for me, you will not believe he did it. You will all be amazed. He is not just popular and that is his problem. Big producers are very expensive to work with but the leaners would collect little money from you and some of them are good. When they produce some of these songs, you will be surprised even producers like Don Jazzy would be shocked.
Myths
People always believe that once music doesn’t work out well for them, it is their uncle or aunt in the village, but as for me since I started singing, all the competitions I have gone for I always won. So I don’t believe you need to have spiritual powers before you make it. Your talent is all you need because music is a gift.
For the future
By next year I see myself as the biggest super star that the world would recognize; not just in Nigeria but the world. That is because I do not see Nigerian musicians as competition to me. People aim to break their records. I am a hero, I am a legend. Sorry to say this but this is what my mind tells me. If any opportunity is given to me, yes I believe I will make it.
