Expdonaloaded News: Bedridden for 12 years, time running out on embattled boy

Daniel
Diagnosed with neck injury leading to weakness of all four limbs that rendered him paralysed from the waist downwards, Daniel Imo Emori has been confined to bed for 12 long years lying on his back. He fixes his gaze steadily on the roof of his small room. His only prized limbs are his rickety and skinny hands that are even contorted and shriveled into some anomaly due to lack of physical activity. Everything else is paralysed from an accident he was involved in a long time ago.

Emori’s paralysis passes out urine and stool through a pipe.
At moment the 31-year-old is not brooding about his situation, he directs his attention at the 21-inch television placed at the opposite corner of his small room.
But those moments are short-lived, as he quickly switches back to “why me, Lord mode.”
“I even wonder why I am still alive because half of my body is totally cold, just like a dead body,” he says. “Perhaps God has a reason for keeping me alive all these years, and that is why I refuse to question Him, much as I am tempted to do so every single day of my 12 years in this situation.”
Yes, 12 years is how long Daniel has vegetated, and his story is something of a legend around his place of work at Onitsha, within the vicinity of the River Niger Head Bridge, on October 10, 2003, where he went to deliver some goods as delivery truck driver.
He was just 21 years when the incident occurred. Today, Daniel is ensconced in his new house in Dutse Makaranta, Bwari Area Council of the FCT, bedridden for 12 years in what has become the worsening of condition as the little string of hope and assistance he had been holding to is fast vanishing as the helping body complains of hard times and shortage of means.
Lying face-up in his solitary room with only a piece of old wrapper to cover part of his body, the 33-year village boy from Adadama Community of Abi Local Government Area in Cross River State narrated his story which is laced with mystery, tears and sorrow. This is the second time in less than two years Abuja Metro is listening to the same sad and tortous tale of agony and pains. When we first published the report of Emori in his sorry state, not much came his way to assist him. Only the church body that carried his burden continued, but now complain that they are not finding things easy either.
Long road to pain
“It was after my SSCE in 2000 that I travelled to Onitsha, Anambra State, in search of a job. I worked in a Pharmaceutical company- Ricol, as delivery van driver, after undergoing six month driving training.   The fateful day was October 10, 2003. On that day, I was sent by one of our field Manager to deliver some goods to a customer at Fegge, around River Niger Bridgehead. On arrival, we spent three hours waiting, but when she did not show up, I spoke to the three truck attendants that instead of spending the whole day waiting for the women, it was better for us to go and deliver some goods to another customer before coming back to her.
While about reversing the truck, another customer approached us that he needed some of the drugs so I stopped the vehicle and jumped down from the driver’s side to attend to him. It was at that point that a cow emerged from nowhere running towards me. before I could close the door of the vehicle; it lifted me by the horns and started running with me. As people were shouting, the cow threw me on the ground and that was the beginning of this problem. I was rushed to a nearby clinic, but the Doctor in charge then referred us to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu.

Abandoned
Like we reported earlier, during Emori’s agonizing condition, he told us that his employer, Ricol Pharmaceutical Company heartlessly abandoned him to his fate, even when the incident occurred in the line of his duty. “They sent somebody to visit me in the hospital. But after the bill was showed to him, he never returned again.”
Help from above
During my stay in the village, I had an encounter with a journalist who posted my story on facebook. It was through his report that a Non-Governmental Organization–Damaris Mailer Foundation came to visit me in my village.
The Foundation is based in Delta State under the supervision of Rev. Charles Munso Asiedu of World Link Outreach Ministry.
They brought me to Primus Hospital in Karu.
I was admitted and operated upon after paying an initial emergency fee of N150,000. They also paid another N200,000 for cervical spine surgery and other monies for urethra repair and surgery amounting to N1,600, 000.
The surgery was on February 10, 2013 and I was discharged on June 3, 2014. It is the foundation that rented this apartment for me at N150,000 per annum. They also employed a caretaker, Emmanuel Michael for me and placed him on a monthly allowance of N12,000, while on my part, they pay me N22,000 monthly for feeding and other costs.

He winced in agonizing pains and sorrow as he narrated his story to Abuja Metro.
The distraught young man is appealing to Nigerians for financial assistance and prayers to continue his medication and follow-up check up at the hospital as the foundation is no longer buoyant financially.
Present story
But all these were his situation in July last year when Abuja Metro did a story on him. Today, Daniel has been relocated by the same humanitarian group-World Link Outreach Ministry, to Dutse Makaranta in Bwari Area Council of the FCT.
Although it is a new environment and a home tucked away by the hillside, opposite Breakthrough Family Life Church, his condition remains the same, if not worse.
Today, Daniel’s health status has also changed. With a 12 year history of neck injury which resulted in the weakness of all four limbs; inability to sit down unsupported and inability to assume any functional position, doctors say he requires specialized management at Saket City Hospital in India for the following; general body examination/evaluation; infection control for the urethra and pressure sores; wound debridement for pressure sores (plastic surgery); bilateral knee arthroplasty (complete knees replacement and osteoporosis movement.)
Upon his return to Nigeria, he is expected to start intensive physical rehabilitation at Optimal Health Centre to enable him assume some functional status again which is a long term therapy.
Also, during this proposed medical trip to India, it is advised that a physiotherapist from Optimal Health Centre should accompany him to ensure that he is properly handled in transit and also assist in his care while in India to avoid further complications of his condition.
N9m medical bill
The estimated cost of his treatment at Saket City Hospital, India, according to Dr. Harsh Priyadarshi- Head Orthopedics department, is well above N9 million as follows; Preliminary evaluation and conservative management for four days-USD 2000-3000; after this, he will be advised to stay in guest house for two-three weeks to subside the infection-USD 1000-15000 including food and stay in guest house; Skin grafting and debridement—USD 6500-7500 for four-five days of stay in the hospital; Orthopedic intervention [if required]based upon initial assessment USD6000-7000 for five –six days of stay in the hospital and post discharge stay; one week in the guest house-USD500.
Daniel is also required to undergo a six months physiotherapy at the Advanced Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre (APRC0 for trunk strengthening and abdominal muscle strengthening; upper limb functional strengthening; range of motion improvement in lower limb; assisted standing [with standing frame]and independent standing. The total estimated cost is as follows: Monthly total bill is $3400 or N748, 000, and a sic-month total of N4,488,000.
Helpless family
The fifth child from a family of eight, Daniel lost his father who could no longer bear the heart shattering condition of his son. “My father retired from the Civil service to take care of me. But he died when he could no longer stand it. He was a mechanic and driver. Now I am left with an aged mother and my brothers who are not in a position to assist me. Already the people taking care of me, providing me food, accommodation and paying for somebody to take care of me, my medical bills have done their best and are now overstretched financially. They have done a lot for me and grateful to them.”
Hope for Daniel
After undergoing successful surgeries, doctors say Daniel could walk again if he continues with his medications.
Besides, his strong faith has helped keep him from a lot of bad thoughts and actions.

This he confessed much when he said “A man as idle as I, needs to move closer to God, otherwise staying here waiting to be fed, clothed and moved from one place to another can make you have bad thoughts, especially, or someone who was used to having his way.”
Overwhelmed by his plight, we went spiritual as we prayed for God’s healing and other form of help coming his way.
SOS
In answering Amen to the prayer, Daniel said: “I know I am young and I don’t want to die now. If someone can offer a helping hand for my medication, I would forever be indebted to such. I have nothing to give, but God would bless them.”
“Perhaps after reading this story, you will contribute some money for Daniel’s welfare, as they usually help and we are sure if he gets up on his feet someday through your assistance you will be proud and happy ro read a next report that Daniel is healed and ok.
