Nigeria’s security nightmare and terrorist organisation, Boko Haram should expect hell now with Major General Abayomi Gabriel Olonishakin as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). That is the assurance the new CDS’ folks in Ode-Ekiti, his hometown as they hailed his appointment as well deserved and a step towards getting the best service for Nigerian security department.
According to them, the name “Olonishakin” signifies in Yoruba, bravery and intrepidity and was part of the pedigree of the new military chief, who ironically had a phobia and used to hide for uniformed policemen as a child, but grew to develop a profound love for soldiery. Olonishakin’s relatives, particularly his uncle, 78-year-old Pa David Olonishakin, and his stepmother, 65-year-old Madam Juliana also recount his adolescent years, describing him as a very active, charming albeit gentle boy. Describing his appointment as merited and well deserved, Ekiti governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, assured the presidency and the country that the honour done to Ekiti with the appointment would not be misplaced, adding that he was confident that General Olonishakin will exhibit the courage, intelligence, honesty and hardwork that Ekiti people are noted for in the discharge of his duties. Traditional ruler of Ode Ekiti, Oba Samuel Aderiye, the Amerijoye 11 of Odeland, said the new CDS is a good man and a great son of this community who has been involved in the progress of the town since he was a grown-up. “He has been a member of his age group since he left school and he has been very active in that group. We have seven of such groups. He has been a very supportive son of the soil. We have a society called Ode Development Union, he is a strong member of the union and has been very supportive of it. He has also been very helpful to qualified natives of our town who need employment and he has done very well in this aspect. My advice for him is to remember his countryhome and the child of whom he is and do well in his assignment to the nation. The English man says, East or West, home is the best. I also urge him to always consult God before he takes any crucial decision on his job. I pray that God would see him through this national assignment,” the monarch said. Giving advice to President Muhammadu Buhari on the appointment of his cabinet, Oba Aderiye urged the President to take his time, saying: “The President has said that he is for everybody and for nobody, which means the work he has come to do would be done for everybody, regardless of party or tribal differences. Our President is a very good man and a man of his words. He is one who has done the job before and has got experience in doing it. We wish him well and pray that God would assist him so that he would eventually appoint people who would perform and do the work with the fear of God. It is a pity that politicians nowadays have become too materialistic as they only seek for money and not good name. We advise the President to take his time to search for very credible hands to work with him.” Pa Gabriel Olonishakin, the head of the Olonishakin clan in Ode-Ekiti and General Olonishakin’s uncle said he was very happy when he learnt about his nephew’s appointment as CDS on the radio. “I have no doubt that he would prove to be the son of whom he is, we are people of great name and character in our family: The name Olonishakin means the only strong and dependable male child. His great grandfather was so named because he was the only male out of the nine children his parents had. And so being the only male, his parents named him Olonishakin, meaning; “It’s God who produces a strong, male child.” His great grandfather was a courageous and upright man who loved everyone in the family and Abayomi has also taken to those traits too. “My advice for him is to remember that his present position in the country is a good thing for our family, Ode community, Ekiti State and Nigeria in general. I also advise him to do his job with patience, wisdom, knowledge and understanding and I pray that God would continue to bless him with all these virtues so that his boss would be happy with him in the course of discharging his duties. I urge him to continue to be truthful so that the whole would know that he is truly our son.” Pa Olonishakin’s wife, Chief (Mrs.) Eunice Olonishakin also described the CDS as a very good son who has the love of everyone at heart. Sixty five-year-old Mrs. Juliana Olonishakin, stepmother to the new Army chief recalled how proud she felt when in 1979, she joined the General’s parents to see him hand over the flag of Nigeria to the then President-elect, Alhaji Shehu Shagari during his inauguration. She said she fondly call him ‘Brother Abayo’ because he was already about 10 years old before she got married to his father and as the Yoruba culture demands, the general was a small husband to her “I am very happy that he was given the appointment and I want to assure President Buhari that he has chosen the best man for the job. He would do the work well because he is a man who has the love of the country at heart. I wish him the best in his new assignment for the nation. I also pray that the good Lord shall continue to be with him and guide him”, the elated woman said. Major General Olonishakin was until his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff, the head of the Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command, Minna, Niger State.
