NEMA Director General, Alhaji Sani Sidi, who was in Maiduguri, Borno capital yesterday with other officials of the agency, including Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Charles Otegbade and his Finance counterpart, Alhaji Akeem Akingbola, told journalists in an interview that Borno alone had over 70 per cent of the total population of IDPs in the three North East states affected by insurgency. He said the agency was working towards ensuring the resettlement of displaced persons in 22 IDP camps in Maiduguri.
“We are working towards durable resettlement of displaced persons in the North East. We are in Borno as part of our humanitarian efforts,” he stated. He said NEMA signed an MoU with Borno government on the management of humanitarian needs of the displaced persons about two months ago, adding that his visit to Borno was aimed at kick-starting the humanitarian support for the IDPs. He added that his visit to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) was to see those injured in recent bomb blasts.
Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima lauded the NEMA Director General, saying the DG had shown personal commitment to the plight of displaced Boko Haram victims. “Under the stewardship of Alhaji Sidi, NEMA is one of the performing agencies of the Federal Government.
“The DG has made efforts as head of NEMA to impact on the lives of people through the activities of the agency.
“NEMA has provided foodstuffs that could sustain the IDPs for three months. We got 26.,000 bags of rice,” he disclosed.
