Expdonaloaded News; FIFA investigations: Blatter may be next as Swiss authorities widen dragnet

BN-IY682_SWFIFA_M_20150617054323Switzerland’s attorney general on Wednesday said he hasn’t ruled out questioning outgoing FIFA President Sepp Blatter, as he confirmed plans to widen his investigation into alleged corruption at world soccer’s governing body.

Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber told a news conference that his office would interview “all relevant people” as part of its investigation. Mr. Lauber and a special task force of investigators are examining the awarding of the Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 World Cups for evidence of corruption.
“This doesn’t exclude interviewing the president of FIFA or the secretary-general,” he said, referring to Mr. Blatter and Jérôme Valcke.
Mr. Lauber’s comments were his first public remarks on FIFA since parallel Swiss and U.S. investigations into the organization were unveiled in May, after undercover Swiss police arrested several soccer officials at a luxury hotel in downtown Zurich. The arrests were prompted by the U.S. investigation, which is looking into suspected corruption at the body dating back more than 20 years.
The Swiss attorney general called his office’s investigation “huge and complex on many levels.” Investigators are currently examining 9 terabytes of data, including information taken from FIFA’s headquarters outside of Zurich..post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..The investigation is also looking at 53 relationships reported by banks as suspicious, “partly in addition” to 104 banking relationships that are already known to the authorities.Ten high-ranking FIFA officials are in the process of being interviewed as part of the investigation. Other people could be added to the list, Mr. Lauber said.
Mr. Lauber declined to provide a timetable for the investigation’s progress and urged soccer fans to be patient. “This will take more than the legendary 90 minutes,” he said, referencing the length of a soccer match.Switzerland is currently detaining seven high-ranking soccer officials, pending extradition to the U.S. A total of 14 people, including nine current and former FIFA officials, have been indicted on broad corruption charges by the U.S. Justice Department.
The scandal prompted Mr. Blatter, who has run FIFA since 1998, to resign just four days after he was elected to a fifth four-year term as president. He hasn’t been named in the U.S. indictments or questioned by authorities in Switzerland.
Mr. Blatter is expected to leave his post after an election for his successor is held. The election is likely to be held in December.
