Expdonaloaded News; Constitution amendment: Senate goes to Supreme Court

SenateLess than 24 hours after it suspended the process of overriding President Goodluck Jonathan’s veto, Senate has resolved to approach the Supreme Court on the matter.

It was gathered yesterday that the Body of Principal Officers agreed that in order to save the entire constitution amendment, Senate would go to the Supreme Court to present the National Assembly’s case.
A ranking member of the body told Expdonaloaded blogs: “The Supreme Court does not have all the details of the matter. We will present our side of the matter and back it up with all the relevant documents.
“The National Assembly complied with all the necessary constitutional requirements in amending the constitution as spelt out in sections 8 and 9 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
“We complied with sections 8 and 9 of the Constitution by getting four-fifths of both chambers and two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly in the process of passing the alterations. I don’t think that the alterations are dead as being insinuated in some quarters. It is not over until it is over. The Seventh National Assembly has not expired.
“When we approach the Supreme Court, the interface would have to be informal but the apex court has to be fully briefed on the matter.”post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..He also confirmed that President Jonathan had not returned the signature page of the constitution alterations bill as requested by the National Assembly.
“Senate, through the Senate president, formally requested the return of the signature page formally, but it was not returned. Mr. President refused to sign the alterations but he did not return the bill that was signed by the clerk to the National Assembly,” he said.
