The single lane Ilorin/Mokwa Road is one of the busiest roads in the country as it remains the shortest link between the North and the South-West. The administration of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, had reduced travellers’ burden on the road by partially dualising the Ilorin/Ibadan end of it.
The road is plied daily by heavily loaded trailers and commercial buses on trade missions. The road has countless winding points, which make over taking dangerous.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com.Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kwara State, Mary Wakawa, said the crash occurred at about 2a.m.She said the casualty figure was high because of the nature of the accident and the time it occurred, which apparently prevented prompt rescue operation.“We had always cautioned motorists against night travelling. The inherent dangers in it far outweigh whatever gains they claim are in it. We will not relent on this campaign until we get the needed results,” she said. The FRSC men were seen packing mutilated bodies of the victims inside a Hilux van, while eight injured persons were helped into an ambulance belonging to the paramilitary body. The two vehicles later headed to the direction of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.Sources at the scene said the bus was heading to an unnamed state in the northern part of the country, while the trailer was said to be coming from Kebbi State to Oyo State when the accident happened.“We heard a bang around 2a.m inside our hut and sporadic wailing of human beings, but none of us could come out to verify the true causes of these until this dawn when we got to the horrible scene,” a middle -aged farmer said. When Expdonaloaded blog visited the scene at about 7.05a.m, congealed human blood was noticed on the road, just as foodstuff and clothes littered the area.
Men of the FRSC were seen clearing the blocked road , forcing motorists to drive at snail speed.
