A Pakistani policeman killed a man in
custody after the inmate allegedly made blasphemous comments, officials
said on Thursday, days after a Christian couple accused of the same
crime was killed.
Tufail Haidar was arrested in Gujrat, a city in Punjab, for making derogatory remarks about the companions of Prophet Mohammed.
He continued to make insulting comments, enraging assistant sub-inspector Faraz Naveed, according to Rana Shahid from the Civil Lines Police Station, where Haidar was detained.
Shadid said that the officer struck Haidar on the neck with an axe on Thursday, killing him.
However, police arrested Naveed.
Shadid said that the gruesome attack
came two days after a Christian couple was first beaten and then burned
to death near Lahore for alleged blasphemy.
Report says a charge of blasphemy is considered highly serious in Pakistan.
It added that an elderly British man
with mental illness, sentenced to death for blasphemy, was shot by a
prison guard in September and wounded.
Punjab Governor, Salman Taseer, was killed by his police guard in 2011 for allegedly criticizing the blasphemy laws which were introduced by military ruler Ziaul Haq in 1980s.
