He said the boys had made millions of Nigerians very happy and proud, adding that he and other Nigerians are awaiting their return to a heroes’ welcome from a joyous and grateful nation.
President Buhari applauded “the exemplary zeal, determination, commitment, hard work, patriotism and soccer artistry, which the youthful Golden Eaglets put on display throughout the tournament to win the championship for a record fifth time”, the Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity, F emi Adesina said in a statement.
The President noted with delight that the Golden Eaglets not only won the World Cup, but they are also bringing home highly-valued individual awards such as the Golden Boot won by Victor Osimhen for being the tournament’s highest goal scorer and the Golden Ball, won by the team captain, Kelechi Nwakali for being the best player.
Buhari expressed the believe that by their triumph in Chile, the Golden Eaglets had shown the world that the indomitable Nigerian spirit is alive and waxing stronger.
He said the Golden Eaglets’ latest victory on the global stage was an affirmation of the significant progress Nigeria is now making towards positively redefining and rediscovering its potential for greatness in the comity of nations.
Meanwhile, NFF Pinnick was full of praise for President Buhari for speak- ing passionately via Skype to the squad ahead of what was only the second – ever all-African final, adding the team had achieved beyond ex- pectations. “This is a sweet victory and I want to use this opportunity again to thank President Buhari for his sup- port and fatherly role which inspired the players to give their best against Mali.” said Pinnick.
