Seven persons have lost their lives in a motor accident at Ute village along Benin-Lagos bypass in Edo State. A Toyota Haice bus marked LAGOS EKY-733 XD had reportedly rammed into a parked Iveco trailer last Wednesday, resulting in the death of seven passengers. The bus was said to be conveying passengers from Lagos when it lost control and collided with the stationary truck with registration number SMK 799 XN about 12:30 pm.
Edo State Police Command spokesman, DSP Stephen Onwochei, who confirmed the incident, said bodies of the victims had been deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary. He gave details of the casualties as four females and three males, including the driver of the passenger bus. He advised drivers to drive with care during and after the ember months. Meanwhile, in another incident, Onwochei has confirmed the arrest of five persons, including the out-going youth Chairman of Uyinmwendin community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State over alleged plot to unleash terror on residents of the community. One cut-to-size single barrel gun and three live cartridges were allegedly recovered from one of the hoodlums hired to carry out the attack. Onwochei said the case was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), police headquarters, Benin City. “The youth leadership of that village was dissolved, that group felt uncomfortable and they resorted to conducting themselves in the manner that was likely to cause breach of peace. “The other group went and reported at a police station, in the process five of them were arrested and when they were searched, one cut-to-size gun and a cutlass were recovered”, he said, advising aggrieved members of the public to always seek legitimate means of redress.
