Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu has urged President
Muhammadu Buhari to deal ruthlessly with the Boko Haram insurgents,
warning that the terrorists were bent on ravaging the entire nation with
their brutal activities. He said the threat by the terrorists to enforce Islamic law in northern
part of the country was real, adding that should the terrorists
succeed, no part of the nation would be spared.
Amosu, who gave the charge at the flying ceremony to mark the end of his
career in the Nigerian Air Force(NAF), said “the threat of terrorism is
very real, and should the terrorist succeed, no part of the nation will
be spared, hence, it is absolutely critical that we match the
determination of terrorists with an even more ruthless determination of
our own to overcome the threats of terrorism”.
The former service chief, who said the country needs its armed forces
to rise to the challenge of defending its territorial integrity against
the scourge of terrorism and restore the peace and security necessary
for sustained development, urged military personnel to live up to the
expectation of serving the nation with courage and determination.
Amosu, assured that the Nigerian military was capable to bring the
activities of the insurgence to an end, saying the freedom of movement
and action of Boko Haram members had have been substantially
restrained.
“What is left now is mop-up exercise and to make sure some of our borders are completely closed and secured,” he said.
On President Buhari’s pledge to end insurgency by December, the former
NAF chief said “Mr President has given the timeline that by December,
Boko Haram will be defeated, but don’t forget there are two aspects of
fighting terrorism.
“One aspect is the counter. He is saying the counter aspect of it which is being led by the military must conclude by December.
“The other aspect is a continuous process that involves the customs and
the police, which are supposed to lead in this and that aspect is still
there. The aspect to counter is an agenda that can be met.”
