Expdonaloaded News; Senator Ndu urges Buhari to rescind order on sack of soldiers from checkpoints

Senator Ben Ndu has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to rescind his directive that military checkpoints in the country be dismantled.Senator Ndu, who made this call yesterday in Enugu at a briefing with newsmen, said withdrawing soldiers from the highways would imperil the lives of road users in the country.“I found the directive a little bit worrisome in the sense that there is really insecurity in the country.I believe he should have addressed the issue of insecurity before withdrawing the armed forces from the major roads in Nigeria.

“What that means is that armed robbery and kidnapping will resurface again and Nigerians will be living in fear. People like me who have been using the roads because the roads have been comparatively safe all these while will now begin to fly.
“So, I’m appealing to him to rescind his decision and allow the military to stay.
“For instance, you can see we still have bridges; the Lokoja bridge, the one at Ajaokuta has to be properly policed and the only people who can do this are the Nigeria armed forces.
“I’m not against the Nigerian police, but you will notice that since the military has been on the highways armed robbery and kidnapping have reduced on the major highways,” he said.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..Ndu, who represented Enugu-West in the Senate under former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, therefore, appealed to Buhari to rescind his decision until such a time when insecurity in the country would have been properly addressed.“This is an appeal to Mr President and I believe I am speaking for the majority of Nigerians, who use the highways; there are no more bus attacks; Boko Haram is there; we have militants.
“I remember sometime when Barnabas Garmade’s convoy, as chairman of our party, was chased by armed robbers.
“So, with the military on the way going to Aba you will agree with me that armed robbery has been reduced because of the fear of the military.
“Nigerians will cry if Mr. President fails to rescind his directive.
“Even if he wants to do it, it is not now; let him work for a while and think about how to solve insecurity before withdrawing soldiers from the highway; this is my view and I believe this is also the view of other Nigerians, who use the highway,” he said.
According to the senator, the constitution demands that the president provides security, saying it did not matter whether he used the police or the military to achieve that.
