The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, has
given a four-week ultimatum to hoodlums in the state to submit illegal
guns with them.
Aderanti said on Wednesday that the decision was arrived at during the
weekly Security Council meeting presided over by Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode.
He said the governor ordered all security agencies in the state to
mop- up all illegal arms and weapons, “often used by unscrupulous
persons to terrorise innocent citizens”.
He said, “Governor Ambode was concerned about the safety of lives and
property and urged security agencies to ensure that Lagos is rid of the
activities of hoodlums.
“He directed that security agencies should give an ultimatum to
individuals that are in possession of illegally-acquired weapons. We are
giving them a four-week ultimatum; they should hand over all the
weapons that are in their possession to the area commanders. After four
weeks we intend to take steps.”
The commissioner described the illegal guns as “weapons of mass destruction that are being used against innocent people”.
Aderanti, however, added that security agencies would be forced to
take decisive steps to recover weapons after the expiration of the
period of grace.
