Expdonaloaded News; 975,991 candidates for NECO exam

necoThe Chairman, Governing Board of National Examinations Council (NECO), Dr. Paddy Njoku, has revealed that a total of 975,991 candidates enrolled for the NECO examination this year.

He revealed this while addressing newsmen after monitoring the June/July 2015 NECO Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) yesterday at the Model Secondary School, Maitama, Abuja.
Njoku also said in the near future, NECO would adopt computer-based examinations.
He said the council had plans of using Computer Based Test (CBT) in subjects that needed CBT and in objective tests but some subjects on practical and essays would not be included.
According to him, there has been gradual progress in the past two years but attributed most of the failures of the students in the past examinations to lack of quality teachers in the nation, as students produce what they have been taught.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..Liking the problem with the popular computer term, “Garbage in, Garbage out,” Njoku said providing teachers with the correct materials, emphasising on quality, commitment and welfare of the teachers would improve students’ performance.
He said government needed to build quarters for teachers for intensive training and also providence as they are a very important segment for Nigeria’s sustainability.Njoku challenged the governments at all levels to encourage the education sector to ensure quality teachers for effective results.“There has been gradual progress in the sense that, most of the time, performance is based on students who make five credits including Mathematis and English, so, in the last two years it has increased gradually.
It is not something that is going to be automatic, the rot that created dismal performance in education was created over the years, simply because, as they say in computer language, ‘Garbage In, Garbage Out’. If we don’t get the correct materials to be teaching the students, in terms of teacher quality,  you cant expect the students to do wonders. so, we are trying to encourage authorities to make sure that teachers a.
Government need to build teachers quarters like, customs quarters, police quarters or legislator’s quarters because teachers are a very important segment of our national life. If we want this country to be be quitted to very responsible people when you and I are no longer her, we must make sure that teachers are taken good care of so they can produce good students, so we take care of the future of the country. Like I said,
It is not something you do over night, and it is not just NECO but something that will be done in conjunction with all the other authorities that makes sure that education progresses.
You can’t plant cocoyams and reap yams, so we have to look at the quality, commitment and of course the welfare of the teachers to make sure that what we demand from them, they have no excuse not to give the best. A situation where people say we have employed 1000 teachers without knowing whether those teachers have been properly trained as teachers should not be allowed”.
He added that the councils  are simply examiners who attest if students are well or badly trained, thereby, they don’t take the blame for students failure, but rather diagnose and give evaluation, then push it on to government.
