In statement issued by the Marketing Manager of Neimeth International Pharmaceutical Plc, Jahswill Oberebe, the company described sickle cell as an inherited disorder passed from parents to their children.
The statement added: “The discovery of sickle cell dates back to 1910 when James B. Herrick (USA) discovered distorted red blood cells in a black student from West Indies. Features include stunted growth, frequent and severe infection, damage of many organs, episodes of unpredictable pain in the back, chest, abdomen and extremities (crises), haemolyticanaemia, chronic leg ulcer and delayed puberty.”
Advances in medical intervention, Oberebe said included bone marrow/stem cell transplant. But he explained that people with sickle sell could have a good quality life if well managed.
He said cajanuscajan, an edible bean available in the country and preserved in Ciklavit, had been found to contain anti-sickling properties.
The statement explained that Ciklavit reduced the frequency and severity of painful crises, resulting in improved quality of life.
