Addressing a press conference yesterday, the Comptroller of the command, Umar Yusuf said the officers sustained serious injuries on the head, hand and leg. While commending them for their gallantry, Yusuf urged the affected officers and other officials of the NCS not to be deterred by the incident.
His words: “I want to commend your gallantry in fighting the smugglers and your efforts at bringing the seizures to base despite the fact that you sustained various degrees of injuries.”
“We are happy that you are alive and we are proud of you and I can assure you that the NCS will do everything to reward your gallantry.“They (officers) fought gallantly, matching them (smugglers) with the newly acquired weapons, which they have been armed with, this led to the smugglers fleeing and leaving their weapons behind.”Among lethal weapons abandoned by the smugglers included, locally-made gun, cut to size rifle, knives and machetes.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..The smugglers, who bowed to superior power of the NCS, later abandoned a big locally- made boat loaded with over 2000 bags of parboiled rice.
Yusuf disclosed that no arrest was made as the smugglers jumped into the water during the encounter, which occurred at Bawe Creek, along Nigeria/Benin Republic border.
He acknowledged the efforts of the Customs Comptroller-General, Abdullahi Dikko Inde in equipping the service with necessary facilities, which has made it combat-ready to fight smugglers.
The Comptroller the read riot act to smugglers and criminals on the waterways, saying that their days were numbered.
“Officers and men of this command will give total zero tolerance to smugglers’ nefarious activities on the waterways because, we are now well equipped to match them till they give up.”
