Expdonaloaded News; Speaker: Involve members’ constituencies –APC

APC-Logo_7The leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC), has been called upon to ensure that the constituency of any legislator wishing to be the speaker of either the National or State House of Assembly is involved in deciding the suitability of such lawmaker for the position.

The call was made in Lagos by Prince Olu Ologbese, Life Patron of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo/Ekiti chapter, who also doubles as the President of Association of Good Leadership Advocates Peace Development, Lagos (AGLAPDL).
His words: “I call upon the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) to make sure that in appointing any member as Speaker and into key positions, the constituency of such a member should be visited to ascertain how much influence and popularity he/she has got over his people. “Since politics is the game of number and popularity, the leadership of the party should make sure they respect the views of their colleagues particularly when they are in the minority because when you want to appoint an unpopular member, who can not even win or deliver his constituency over a popular choice of the majority, then you will be creating problems and disconnection in that community.
“Looking back, it will be observed that most of the areas APC lost elections were areas they imposed an unpopular candidate.“For instance, if only one person is to be picked as minister to represent his state and the party fields an unpopular man or woman that cannot even win as a local government chairman, it will kill the morale of the majority of members.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..“I would not mind if APC can present a minister that is not a partisan politician, but has the credentials to perform and a good heart to serve the people adequately.”Prince Ologbese advised APC national leader and other party executives that when appointing any candidate as a minister, serious investigations should be made on him or her because his/her performance would tell on the overall scorecard of the party, considering that during another election, Nigerians would be eager to see results in all sectors of the economy.
He said: “In choosing speakers in all the legislative Houses, the leadership of the party should not close their eyes and leave it to the legislators alone. They should make sure that those to be appointed are highly intelligent men and women, those, who would not succumb to pressure from the hungry legislators, who use impeachment treat as a cheap blackmail on credible and uncompromising speakers. I pray God gives us cool-headed and highly intelligent Speakers like Aminu Tambuwal and David Mark, who were able to pilot the Houses they headed to a safe destination.
He further said,”In all honesty, if it will not defy the order of politics, I would love David Mark to carry on as the leader of the upper house but our politicians will do anything to become the Senate President and Speaker House of Representative respectively even when they don’t have what it takes to steer the ship of the House.
Ologbese went on to say,” Lagos State is the Center of Excellence of our dear nation Nigeria, therefore whoever will emerge as the Speaker must be a very intelligent, loyal and acquaint himself/herself to all the nooks and crannies of the State. He must know all the areas of Lagos from Victoria Island to Ikeja to Surulere to Ebuttemetta and majorly all the other areas that the masses dwell mostly that has been tagged down-town which are calling for urgent touch of the State Government. For instance a situation where law was made that motor-cyclist popularly known as Okada should not carry nursing-mothers is laughable because not all community are motorable and you don’t expect these special breed of women to walk out their lives. On such occasion residents manage to beg this motor-cyclist to carry them instead of trekking with their legs over a long distance.
Majority of the laws passed under Ikuforiji as the Speaker of Lagos over a long period of time was not intelligent enough. Such laws created problems to the masses and exposed them in having problems with our Nigeria Police especially the average Lagosian. As we grow up, we should be concerned with the welfare of the people we serve opined Ologbese.
