Expdonaloaded News; Power sector unbundling, a success –Sambo

sambo VPVice President  Namadi Sambo yesterday chaired the last National Council on Privatization (NCP) meeting of the Jonathan administration where he was said to have  improved the performance of the council for the past five years.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Benjamin Dikki, said it was during Sambo’s tenure that the power sector was successfully unbundled and handed over to the private sector, thereby reducing the burden of investments by government.
“We reviewed some of the achievements that have been attained during your tenure as NCP Chairman. We looked at the privatization of the power sector and all the challenges and because of your political commitment and that of Mr. President, we were able to overcome such challenges,” Dikki said.
He also acknowledged the successful privatization of NITEL in spite of the challenges with a core investor now that has taken over the telecommunication company to resuscitate and revitalize it.
Dikki noted that it was during the tenure of the vice president that a new innovation, the Project Advisory Approach, was adopted which saw to the substitution of consultants with the inter-agency project delivery team. He said government’s skilled resources were pooled to undertake the reforms. According to him, such reforms were being replicated in other critical sectors of the economy, thereby cutting costs of reform by relying on internal expertise.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..“We thank you for your leadership for your vision, your expertise, your humanness and for being a father to the BPE,” Dikki noted.
Vice President Sambo stated that after a review of the NCP’s operations, he concluded that there was tremendous improvement in the activities of the council. He expressed happiness that during his tenure, the council achieved a lot.“There is no doubt that the achievements we have witnessed in the various sectors of the privatization exercise are enormous. I think two out of the whole; the power sector and the NITEL/MTEL privatizations stand out,” Sambo said.He praised the efforts and actions of the council that had led to the successful privatization of both NITEL/MTEL and the power sector which he said was a pride not only for Nigeria, but indeed, Africa.Sambo said though there might be some lack of information on some of the privatization processes, but all decisions taken were based on sound professional advice that has led to the success of the privatization exercise.
The vice president commended the BPE for the tremendous improvement while urging the management to continue in that direction.
“I am looking forward to extending the same experience and support to the incoming government to ensure that we succeed in this privatization venture and ultimately to contribute positively towards the progress and development of our great country,” he said.
