The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Lagos State
University (LASU) chapter have resolved to make sacrifice by ensuring
their students regain the lost eight weeks due to the recess which
disrupted academic activities for two months.
The decision to make the sacrifice for the sake of the students,
especially final year ones, was taken at ASUU-LASU congress held on
Monday to deliberate on the outcome of a meeting between the Governing
Council and three staff unions.
Security was beefed up at the LASU Badagry Expressway Main gate with
about eight police vans stationed there while one was spotted at Iba
Expressway gate of the institution.
Expdonaloaded blog also gathered that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police
through Area E Command invited the union leaders who insisted the
invitation be made formal. ‘’We are expecting the letter from the
police. The Vice Chancellor reported the unions to the commissioner. We
are waiting for them’’, one of the union leaders told our Correspondent.
The ASUU-LASU chairman, Dr. Adekunle Idris, in a text message urged
his colleagues o be on ground, reach their students through the heads of
department and take attendance at every lecture taught.
He said: ‘’As resolved at congress, we must make up for the eight
weeks already lost through the recess. Members should pay extra
attention to final year students’’.
When our Correspondent visited the campus on Tuesday, lectures were
held in the morning and others were on-going just as the ASUU-LASU boss
confirmed that his members taught students.
Dr. Idris revealed that lectures took place at Faculties of Law,
Management Science, Sciences, Arts and several others in various
departments.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com..The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) LASU
chapter, Mr. Saheed Oseni, said the campus is peaceful with members at
their duty post and also confirmed that lectures have started as well as
the presence of armed policemen at the two entrance gates leading to
the university.
The chairmen of ASUU and SSANU disclosed that the three staff unions
would meet with representatives of the Governing Council for the second
time in an effort to find solution to the current crisis rocking the
31-year-old university.
Idris and Oseni also confirmed that the union leaders met on Sunday
with some Obas from Ojo Local Government Council over the lingering
crisis and wondered why the embattled VC, Prof John Obafunwa would be
sending emissaries to them without doing the needful. Library
Admin Block 1 housing the offices of the VC, two deputy VCs,
Registrar, Bursar and university Librarian remained under lock and key
as vehicles were used to block roads leading to the building.
The staff unions confirmed that the VC and his management attempted
to enter the office but security report did not favour the move forcing
them to wait at a filling station close to the university with armed
security personnel.
