The death a former local government chairman, his daughter, two sons
and five others, who were allegedly murdered at the weekend, by gunmen
in the state has created tension in Rivers State.
It was gathered that the former chairman of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local
Government , simply identified as Christopher, and his children as
well as five others, were killed by armed bandits, who invaded
Obrikom/Obor communities in the local government area.
Two persons were said to have been wounded in the incident, as the
gunmen went on a shooting spree at about 7:30 p.m. in the area.
It was gathered that the attack was politically motivated.
Meanwhile, a dusk to dawn curfew had been declared by the Chairman of
Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government. The Police Public Relations
Officer in the state, Ahmad Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police
(DSP), yesterday, confirmed the incident in Port Harcourt.
Muhammad, however, said no traditional ruler was killed in the attack as rumoured.
He pointed out that the house of an All Progressives Congress (APC)
House of Assembly candidate in the area, Vincent Ogbagu, was also set
ablaze by the rampaging gunmen.
“It was at about 19:30 hours. Some unknown armed men invaded
Obrikom/Obor communities and went on shooting spree, killing nine,
injuring two persons. The gunmen also set ablaze the house of Vincent
Ogbagu, an APC House of Assembly candidate. No traditional ruler was
among the victims,” he said.
The PPRO stated that the Police Command had commenced a manhunt for
the bandits and appealed to members of the public to assist the police
with credible information to enable the arrest of the fleeing killers.Expdonaloaded
