The Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU) has issued an
ultimatum to the university management to reopen the institution for
academic activities, saying the continued closure of the institution is
impacting negatively on the students.
The LASUSU President, Adeyemi Onikoro, in a statement made available
to Expdonaloaded blog said the stoppage of academic activities on LASU’s campuses
was taking its toll on the students, stressing: “The students’ union is
firmly against this.’’
The students union in a statement dated March 23 had faulted the
university management’s decision to force recess on students and staff
of the university because of the just concluded polls without specifying
a resumption date.
“It should be noted that upon the announcement of the said recess,
the union had urged the management to give a specific date of resumption
but it declined. The political atmosphere has been calm and peaceful
and as such, we believe the management should follow the path of other
higher institutions that declared election recesses and thereafter,
resumed activities,’’ he noted.
He said the students’ union was worried about the continued closure, adding that academic calendar was still running.
He said: “The tradition in LASU where students are rushed into
writing examinations eight weeks after resumption due to crisis
management would no longer be tolerated, as it does not allow adequate
preparation for such examinations.’’
Graduating students expected to resume at National Youth Service
Corps (NYSC) camp on May 5, according to him, could not because of the
protracted face-off between the staff unions and the management.
Onikoro also revealed that the ongoing face-off if not tackled could
affect final year Law students, who were expected to proceed to the Law
School as their colleagues from other higher institutions.post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
The students’ union leader urged the Lagos State Government, school
management and staff to find a solution to the crisis in order to move
LASU forward, just as it waits anxiously for a rescheduled convocation
ceremony.
The union also urged the parties involved in the face-off to embrace
dialogue, stressing that the state government and the university
management should look into the demands of the staff unions to ensure
the restoration of academic activities in the institution.
His words: “We want to state emphatically that the union and the
entire students will no longer tolerate any further delay that will
impend the quick resolution of the ongoing crisis and that failure to
meet these demands within stipulated period will force the union to
act decisively.’’post by expdonaloaded.blogspot.com
