Whenn music cum screen diva, Onyeka Onwenu was appointed Director
General of the National Council for Women Development (NCWD), some
people felt that she deserved much better. For them, not only is the
‘Elegant Stallion’ highly educated with a Master’s degree in Media
Studies, she is also a mega star who deserved a bigger portfolio.
On the
contrary, others welcomed Onyeka’s appointment as the NCWD boss, saying
she is a natural women’s rights advocate.
Truly, through her music and the roles she eloquently portrays in
Nollywood films, Onyeka never fails to pass the message that women
should be well treated, even as she always emphasises that women can as
well deliver the goods in whichever vocation they find themselves. Folks
then posited that the talented singer and actress would be like fish in
the water at the NCWD. And this is not farther from the truth going by
her achievements so far.
A visit to the once moribund Women Development Center shows that
major renovation work is ongoing. Beyond the face-lift, lots of people
will agree that Onyeka has brought intellectualism to gender issues,
just as she is using star power to glamourise events organised by her
agency. The topnotch packaging of this year’s edition of the
International Day of the Girl Child held a few weeks back is a good
example of the new way things are done at the National Council for Women
Development.
