Delta orders restriction of movement for council polls

Governor-Emmanuel-Uduaghan4In view of the local government election holding across the 25 council areas of Delta State today, the state government has announced the restriction of movement between the hours of 8.00am and 3.00pm.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who announced this in Asaba, explained that the restriction was to enable voters carry out their civic duty and ensure a peaceful atmosphere for a free and fair election.
The governor added that top government officials were not excluded from the restriction on movement order, advising them to go and cast their votes in their locality and return home.
He said security agencies have been put on alert to handle all security issues and ensure a hitch-free exercise during and after the election.
“I want to assure you that the Delta State Independent Election Commission (DSIEC), has vowed to make the local government election free and fair”, the governor said.
As at the time of filing this report, distribution of sensitive materials was going on, although the non-sensitive materials have long since been distributed.
Saturday Sun learnt that ten political parties would be fielding candidates in the council polls, which would be conducted in 3,624 polling units across 466 wards of the 25 council areas.
While the ruling People’s Democratic Party is fielding 25 chairmanship candidates and 466 councillorship candidates, the main opposition, All Progressive Congress (APC) is fielding 23 chairmanship candidates and 324 councillorship candidates.
